The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old woman in Zuru Local Government Area for allegedly stealing a newborn baby and presenting the child to her husband as her own.
According to the police, the incident occurred on July 23, 2025, shortly after the baby’s biological mother, Fatima Muhammad, gave birth.
The suspect allegedly visited the new mother and offered to help her fetch hot water. Police said she allegedly used the opportunity to flee with the newborn instead of returning with the water.
Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that the suspect had been under pressure over her inability to have a child, particularly as some of her peers had already become mothers.
Police further alleged that the woman had deceived her husband for approximately nine months, making him believe that she was pregnant.
After allegedly taking Fatima Muhammad’s newborn, she reportedly presented the baby to her husband as their child.
The suspect was arrested on August 14, 2026, following sustained police investigations.
Police said the baby was recovered safely and reunited with the biological mother.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be charged to court after investigations are concluded, in accordance with the law.
The Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Hadejia, commended the officers involved in the investigation and recovery operation.
He also assured residents that the command would continue to protect children and ensure that anyone found responsible for such offences is brought to justice.
The police statement was signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, on August 16, 2026.
