The United States has carried out a major military airstrike targeting Iran’s strategic Kharg Island, according to an announcement made Saturday by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The president disclosed the operation in a post on X, stating that American forces struck key Iranian military facilities on the island but deliberately avoided destroying its vital oil infrastructure.
According to Trump, the air raid focused strictly on military targets.
“We totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island,” the U.S. leader said, describing the strike as one of the most powerful bombing operations ever conducted in the Middle East.
He also claimed Iran lacked the capability to defend against U.S. military strikes.
“Iran has no ability to defend anything that we want to attack. There is nothing they can do about it,” Trump said, adding that Iran would never be allowed to develop nuclear weapons or threaten the United States and its allies.
The president further warned Tehran against disrupting shipping through the vital Strait of Hormuz, suggesting that any interference with global maritime traffic could force the United States to reconsider its decision to spare the island’s oil facilities.
Kharg Island, located in the Persian Gulf, is one of Iran’s most strategic energy and military hubs. The island plays a critical role in Iran’s oil exports and hosts key infrastructure linked to the country’s military logistics.
The White House has not released detailed information about the timing of the raid or possible casualties, focusing instead on the strategic message of deterrence.
The strike comes amid an intensifying conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran that erupted earlier in 2026 after coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes targeted Iranian nuclear and military installations.
The escalation reportedly resulted in the death of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, and caused extensive damage to several strategic facilities.
Iran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. military bases and allied positions across the region, including installations in Kuwait and Bahrain.
The conflict has also affected maritime security around the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes — with Iranian forces reportedly restricting vessel movements and targeting commercial shipping.
Casualties have been reported on multiple sides of the conflict. In Iran, dozens of civilians were reportedly killed in various airstrikes, including children in a school bombing incident, while several American service members have also been killed or wounded in retaliatory attacks on military bases.
With military operations continuing and no ceasefire in sight, analysts warn the conflict risks expanding further across the Middle East and disrupting global energy supplies.
