WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — Hunter Biden has disclosed that his father, former United States President Joe Biden, is facing an increasingly difficult battle with cancer, saying the disease has spread to his bones and has become painful and debilitating.
Hunter made the remarks during an interview with the BBC published on Saturday, providing one of the most detailed public updates on the former president’s health since his cancer diagnosis was announced.
According to Hunter, the illness has taken a significant toll on his father and the Biden family.
“I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good — the cancer has spread,” Hunter said, describing the situation as very painful and difficult to watch.
He said the cancer had metastasised to Biden’s bones “and further,” while expressing concern about the impact of the illness on his father.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, Hunter described Joe Biden as the centre of the Biden family and praised him as a father, husband and grandfather.
Joe Biden announced in May 2025, several months after leaving the White House, that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
At the time, Biden said he was receiving treatment and remained optimistic about his prognosis. He also thanked supporters for their prayers, goodwill and encouragement.
Since announcing his diagnosis, Biden has largely maintained a lower public profile while spending more time with his family and undergoing treatment.
The former president’s health had already been the subject of intense public debate during the final months of his presidency and the 2024 presidential campaign, particularly amid concerns about his age and physical condition.
In July 2024, Biden ended his bid for re-election and withdrew from the presidential race. Then-Vice President Kamala Harris subsequently became the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee but lost the November election to Republican candidate Donald Trump, who returned to the White House.
Hunter’s latest comments present a more concerning picture of Biden’s health than previous public statements, suggesting that the former president’s cancer has progressed despite treatment.
