A support group loyal to President Bola Tinubu has distributed food items to residents of Yola, the Adamawa State capital, in what locals describe as an early political outreach aimed at poor and vulnerable Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The distribution, which took place on Thursday, January 1, 2026 (New Year’s Day), involved essential food items including bags of rice, spaghetti, noodles and seasoning cubes. Residents who witnessed the exercise told SUNTV Global Channel that it was carried out within local communities in Yola.
According to eyewitness accounts, the food-sharing initiative was led by Hon. Dahiru Hammandikko, popularly known as Dan Kade Adamawa, who currently serves as the Executive Director of Agricultural Services at the Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority.
“Hon. Dahiru Hammandikko distributed food items to vulnerable groups in our area,” a resident said. “The beneficiaries were mainly underprivileged people.”
The witness further explained that the event was organised by political groups aligned with President Tinubu.
“It was organised by the Tinubu Support Group in collaboration with the Northern Region Support Group,” the resident added.
Locals confirmed that the exercise directly targeted impoverished residents, raising concerns among some observers who view it as an early attempt to mobilise grassroots support ahead of the 2027 polls.
The development comes at a time of rising public frustration over Nigeria’s worsening economic hardship and persistent insecurity.
On the same New Year’s Day, several violent attacks were reported across the country. In Ondo State, residents of Ipele community in Owo Local Government Area were thrown into panic after suspected terrorists attacked and set a police station ablaze in the early hours of January 1, forcing residents to flee their homes.
Similarly, in Plateau State, gunmen suspected to be Fulani militia attacked the Bum community in Jos South Local Government Area on the night of December 31, 2025, killing at least seven people, injuring several others and setting houses on fire during New Year crossover celebrations.
As Nigerians grapple with economic hardship and security challenges, the food distribution in Adamawa has sparked debate over the timing and political implications of such outreach efforts ahead of the next general elections.
