Five suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have reportedly been killed after an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded while they were allegedly assembling it in Borno State.
According to intelligence sources, the incident occurred in Maina Daya Village, located between Sabon Tumbu and Jubilaram in Marte Local Government Area, approximately 29 kilometres east of Monguno.
The deceased were said to include Usman Dan Fulani, identified as an alleged ISWAP medical officer, alongside two foreign Arab IED technicians and two suspected ISWAP bomb-making experts.
Reports indicate that the explosion occurred while the group was allegedly preparing explosive devices believed to be intended for attacks along key military supply routes within the Sector 1 operational area of Operation HADIN KAI.
Security analysts described the incident as a significant setback for ISWAP’s bomb-making network, noting that the loss of experienced explosives specialists could temporarily weaken the group’s capacity to carry out roadside bomb attacks in the Marte–Monguno axis.
Military sources further disclosed that troops have been directed to intensify patrols, conduct cordon-and-search operations, and launch precision offensives around Monguno, Marte, and Gamboru Ngala to prevent the insurgents from regrouping or rebuilding their IED capabilities.
The incident highlights the continued security threat posed by improvised explosive devices, which remain one of the primary tactics used by ISWAP in attacks targeting military personnel and civilians across Nigeria’s North-East.
