The President of the Borno State Youth Association (BOSYA), Samaila Ibrahim Kaigama, reportedly raised concerns over a possible arrest by operatives of Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) before he was detained by the agency.
According to an audio recording obtained by SaharaReporters, Kaigama allegedly expressed fears that he could be taken into custody over information and claims he had been sharing with the media.
In the recording, Kaigama said he was scheduled to meet with Senator Ali Ndume before a planned meeting with the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu. He reportedly stated that the outcome of the meeting would determine his next steps.
Kaigama was quoted as saying he had received information that authorities were unhappy with his public disclosures and believed he was “digging up a lot.”
He reportedly warned his media contacts that if he became unreachable within 24 to 48 hours, they should release the information he had previously shared.
“If you do not hear from me in the next 24 to 48 hours, you can put out whatever you want to put out because I am getting rumours and information that NSA is planning to detain me for the information I’ve been giving out,” he allegedly said.
The BOSYA president also disclosed in the recording that he had communicated with individuals he described as terrorists, claiming they had made what he called “very bold” statements on certain issues.
He said those communications were among the reasons he delayed releasing a video containing some of the information he had gathered.
Kaigama added that he was uncertain about what could happen to him but intended to continue with his planned activities.
His reported arrest by DSS followed his appearance on Channels Television, where he made allegations relating to ransom payments involving Boko Haram terrorists.
The development has attracted attention from rights advocates and activists, with concerns raised over whether the arrest could affect freedom of expression and public accountability.
Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, had earlier claimed that a lawyer sent to the DSS headquarters to meet Kaigama was denied access.
The DSS has not publicly commented on the allegations contained in the audio or the circumstances surrounding Kaigama’s detention.
