An 87-year-old man, Dahiru Garba, has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Yola, Adamawa State, over allegations that he attacked an Area Court judge with a cutlass, causing severe injuries to the judge’s hand.
Garba, a resident of Korawa village in Fufore Local Government Area, was accused of attacking the Presiding Judge of the Mayo-Ine Area Court, Hon. Dauda Hamman, during court proceedings on August 31, 2026.
According to the Adamawa State Police Command, the incident occurred while the judge was presiding over a case involving Garba and another individual identified as Ismail Yusuf.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, the suspect allegedly attacked the judge with a cutlass, repeatedly striking his hand and causing grievous injuries.
Police operatives reportedly arrested Garba immediately after the incident.
The case was initially handled at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Fufore before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Yola on September 4 for further investigation.
Following the completion of investigations, the suspect was arraigned on Monday, September 8, before Chief Magistrate Court I in Yola, presided over by Chief Magistrate Ismail Bello Shelleng.
Garba was charged with one count of causing grievous hurt, contrary to Section 219 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State, 2018.
According to the police, the charge was prosecuted by ASP Zakka Musa on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Kabir Umar Hassan.
The police spokesperson said the charge was read and interpreted to the defendant, who reportedly pleaded guilty and expressed regret over the incident.
According to the statement, Garba attributed his actions to the influence of the devil and appealed for forgiveness.
The court subsequently ordered that the 87-year-old man be remanded at the Yola Correctional Facility pending further proceedings.
The Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, Kabir Umar Hassan, assured members of the public that the case would be diligently prosecuted to ensure justice is served.
The incident has drawn attention to concerns surrounding the safety of judicial officers and security within court premises.
