The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced tighter security measures ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election, including a ban on the participation of Amotekun and other non-state security groups in election-related security operations.
The Force also announced a statewide restriction of movement from 12:00 midnight on Friday, August 14, until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the police said only security agencies recognised under Nigeria’s Constitution and laws would be permitted to carry out security and law-enforcement duties during the election.
The Force warned that no vigilante organisation, non-state security group or other unauthorised body would be allowed to perform the functions of recognised security agencies.
According to the police, such groups have been directed to stay away from election-related security operations and avoid activities capable of intimidating voters, disrupting the electoral process or threatening public peace.
The movement restriction will apply across Osun State during the specified period, with only persons and categories of movement officially exempted by the appropriate authorities permitted to move during the restriction.
The police urged residents to comply with the directive and cooperate with security personnel deployed throughout the state.
Political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders were also urged to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly throughout the electoral process.
The Force said the measures were designed to help maintain peace, protect voters and ensure a secure environment for the conduct of the election.
The police further reaffirmed their commitment to providing a level playing field for all political actors and eligible voters.
Residents were advised to remain calm and law-abiding and to promptly report suspicious or unlawful activities to recognised security agencies.
The announcement comes amid heightened political tension and increased security preparations across Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
