A Nigerian soldier, identified as Muhammad Abdulrauf, popularly known as “Didan Tero,” is reportedly battling for his life after being brutally attacked by a mob in Kaduna State who allegedly mistook him for a bandit.
The incident occurred in the Mai Gero community, where residents, acting on suspicion, reportedly assaulted the soldier amid heightened fears over persistent bandit attacks in the area.
Initial reports circulating on social media claimed Abdulrauf had died from the attack. However, fresh information indicates that the soldier survived and is currently receiving intensive medical treatment at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna.
According to sources familiar with the incident, the soldier, who serves with military operations in Maiduguri, Borno State, was on leave at the time of the attack.
Residents reportedly became suspicious of him due to his appearance and clothing, believing he was linked to a notorious criminal gang operating in the region. The misunderstanding allegedly escalated into a violent mob assault before authorities intervened.
Sources say fear and tension within the community may have contributed to the attack, as residents have been on high alert following repeated bandit activities in the area.
Despite widespread reports of his death, officials and sources close to the matter have confirmed that Abdulrauf remains alive but is in critical condition as medical personnel continue efforts to save his life.
The incident has renewed concerns about mob justice and the dangers of taking the law into one’s own hands, particularly in communities grappling with insecurity and banditry.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the attack, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are expected to continue.
