A disturbing case of alleged abuse and unlawful confinement has emerged in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, where police rescued a 36-year-old woman who was reportedly chained and locked away by her elder brother for more than one year.
The victim, identified as Grace Aniekuoku, was rescued following a distress report received by the FCT Police Command.
Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Sanusi, disclosed that officers attached to the Katampe Division were immediately deployed after authorities received information about the woman’s condition on May 12.
According to the police, the suspect, identified as Chinedu Aniekuoko, allegedly attempted to prevent officers from accessing the property and reportedly resisted arrest.
Despite the resistance, police operatives forced their way into the room where the victim was being held and made a shocking discovery.
Officers found Grace chained inside the room in an extremely weak and emaciated condition. Police said she was surrounded by her own waste and living under deplorable sanitary conditions after allegedly being confined for more than one year and four months.
The suspect was immediately arrested, while the victim was rescued and rushed to a medical facility where she is currently receiving treatment.
Preliminary investigations revealed an even more troubling development. Police said the victim’s young son was allegedly taken away to an unknown location about two years ago.
Investigators believe Grace may have been unlawfully confined to prevent her from demanding answers about the whereabouts of her missing child.
Authorities have since launched efforts to locate and rescue the boy while continuing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the case.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to face prosecution once investigations are concluded.
The shocking incident has sparked outrage among residents and renewed concerns about domestic abuse, unlawful detention, and the need for stronger protection of vulnerable individuals within communities.
