The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has alleged that the Nigerian Army deliberately repurposed images of explosives from 2024 incidents in Oyo State to falsely attribute attacks to IPOB, aiming to justify military operations in the South-East.
In a statement signed by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group claimed the government was collaborating with certain Igbo political elites to “stage attacks” and falsely blame IPOB. The alleged strategy, the group said, was intended to discredit IPOB’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and suppress agitation for Biafran self-determination.
IPOB specifically pointed to images posted on March 12, 2026, by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 82 Division, which were purportedly from an IPOB “bomb factory” during Operation UDO KA. According to IPOB, metadata revealed these images actually originated from 2024 incidents in Oke-Ogun, Oyo State.
“This is no mere error; it is a calculated ploy to justify the ongoing massacre of innocent Biafrans, the destruction of our communities, and the economic strangulation of Igboland,” the statement read.
IPOB also accused the federal government of intensifying propaganda as legal proceedings involving Kanu approach a critical stage, describing allegations linking the group to terrorism as “blatant falsehoods” orchestrated from Aso Rock and amplified by a “complicit media.”
The group called on the governments of the United States and Israel to intervene, reconsider military cooperation with Nigeria, and demanded the immediate release of Kanu and an end to military operations in the South-East.
IPOB reiterated its commitment to non-violent self-determination while calling for an international investigation into alleged human rights abuses.
