SUNTV Global Channel — U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has sharply criticised President Donald Trump for what he described as unconditional American backing for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, warning that Washington is being dragged deeper into a widening Middle East conflict.
In a statement posted on X, Sanders condemned the ongoing war in Gaza Strip, saying the humanitarian toll has become catastrophic after more than two years of continuous bombardment.
According to the senator, over 72,000 people—mostly women, children, and the elderly—have been killed in Gaza, with hospitals, schools, and other civilian facilities severely damaged during the conflict.
Sanders argued that the war is no longer confined to Gaza, accusing Netanyahu of expanding military operations to other parts of the region, including Iran and Lebanon, with strikes reportedly hitting civilian infrastructure such as schools and healthcare facilities.
He further criticised the United States government for supporting the expanded campaign both militarily and politically.
The Vermont senator also pointed to the growing humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, citing figures from the United Nations which indicate that about 700,000 people—more than 10 percent of the country’s population—have been displaced by the escalating violence.
Sanders expressed concern over the Trump administration’s recent move to declare an emergency in order to fast-track additional weapons shipments to Israel, a decision he said could bypass congressional oversight and intensify the conflict.
While acknowledging Israel’s right to defend itself against attacks, Sanders stressed that the scale of destruction and civilian suffering cannot be justified.
He also criticised the authoritarian nature of the Iranian government but insisted that this does not excuse the humanitarian consequences of the current war.
Sanders concluded by urging Washington to prioritise the interests of American citizens and uphold international law rather than supporting policies that could fuel broader and more dangerous conflicts in the Middle East.
