Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have uncovered a secret methamphetamine production laboratory in Imo State, as part of a sweeping nationwide crackdown that led to multiple arrests and huge drug seizures across several states.
According to the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the clandestine lab was discovered in Isiozi Obiato, Umuaka, within Njaba Local Government Area, following weeks of intelligence-driven surveillance.
During the raid carried out on February 25, 2026, NDLEA operatives dismantled the facility and recovered 18.4 kilograms of methamphetamine, along with precursor chemicals and specialized production equipment.
Authorities say the discovery highlights the increasing sophistication of drug trafficking networks, particularly in Nigeria’s South-East, where illegal meth production has become an alarming trend.
In a related operation at the Seme border near Badagry in Lagos State, officers arrested a Togolese woman identified as Hadiza Musa on February 27. She was allegedly caught attempting to smuggle 5,000 tramadol pills concealed inside her luggage.
Elsewhere in Lagos, operatives uncovered 1,040 kilograms of skunk hidden inside an uncompleted building in Akodo village along the Ibeju-Lekki axis.
The anti-narcotics agency also recorded major seizures across the country:
- Kano State: A suspect, Ashiru Bala, was arrested with 1,499 bottles of codeine syrup.
- Katsina State: Authorities intercepted 87.4 kilograms of skunk along the Zaria–Dutsinma road.
- Osun State: Two suspects were apprehended with over 18 kilograms of cannabis in Osogbo.
- Taraba State: Operatives intercepted a vehicle transporting a staggering 637,600 opioid pills, including tramadol and diazepam.
- Abuja (FCT): Officials recovered 499.2 kilograms of skunk at Dei-Dei.
- Borno State: A suspect was arrested with 7,000 tramadol capsules along the Bama–Konduga road.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling drug syndicates, emphasizing that intelligence-based operations and community cooperation remain key to combating narcotics trafficking across Nigeria.
Officials warned that the nationwide clampdown would continue as authorities intensify efforts to curb the growing threat posed by synthetic drugs and opioid abuse.
