Religious tension is brewing in Nasarawa State after the Muslim Youth Council of Nigeria (MYCN) demanded a public apology from the Chairman of Doma Local Government Area, Jonathan Okuba Addra, over alleged blasphemous remarks.
In a statement jointly signed by MYCN National President, Muhammad Shamsudeen, and National Secretary, Alhaji Musa O. Yunusa, the group said it received multiple complaints from stakeholders in Doma accusing the chairman of making offensive comments about Islam during a recent political gathering.
According to the council, Addra allegedly stated that “even if the Prophet is here, he is the leader,” a remark the group described as highly condemnable and a clear act of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
Although MYCN acknowledged reports that the chairman had reportedly withdrawn the statement and apologised during the same event, the group insisted that further steps were necessary to prevent religious tension and safeguard peaceful coexistence.
The council issued a 48-hour ultimatum, demanding that Addra publicly apologise to the Muslim community and publish the apology in at least five national newspapers.
The group also called on the Governor of the state, Abdullahi A. Sule, the Commissioner of Police, and relevant security agencies to closely monitor the situation to maintain peace.
However, Addra has strongly denied the allegation, describing it as false, misleading, and politically motivated.
In a separate statement issued after an emergency security meeting in the area, the chairman said he would never insult any religion, stressing that the issue being circulated was related to internal political matters, not faith.
He further labelled the claims as cyberbullying and defamation intended to incite unrest within the local government.
Addra reaffirmed his commitment to religious tolerance, stating that his administration remains focused on unity, peace, and respect for diversity among residents.
