Nigerian Army GOC Escapes Deadly Ambush, Troops Kill Five Terrorists In Fierce Kebbi Gun Battle

SUNTV GLOBAL REPORT

In a dramatic battlefield encounter, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 8 Division, Major General Bemgha Koughna, narrowly escaped a deadly ambush after suspected terrorists launched a heavy attack on his convoy in Kebbi State.

SUNTV Global gathered that the attack occurred near Mayama Hill while the senior commander was travelling to visit frontline troops under Operation FANSAN YAMMA.

According to an official statement signed by Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, troops came under sudden and intense gunfire from fighters believed to belong to the Lakurawa Terrorist Group.

Fierce Counterattack

Military sources revealed that the terrorists had strategically positioned themselves within dense forest terrain, waiting to strike the convoy as it advanced through the volatile area.

However, in what the army described as a “bold and decisive response,” Major General Koughna reportedly led troops in a swift counter-assault.

Soldiers responded with overwhelming firepower, killing five attackers and forcing the remaining fighters to retreat into the forest.

Military authorities say the quick response not only saved the convoy but also disrupted a planned large-scale attack on security forces in the region.

Weapons Recovered

Following the failed ambush, troops carried out a security sweep and recovered a cache of weapons and operational materials, including:

  • One OJC machine gun
  • One PKT gun
  • Two AK-47 rifles with magazines
  • Large quantities of ammunition
  • ₦840,000 cash in a camel bag
  • Two mobile phones
  • Five motorcycles

Security officials believe the seizure will significantly weaken the operational capacity of the terror group.

Troops On High Alert

The army confirmed that troops remain deployed across the area to prevent retaliatory attacks or regrouping by fleeing militants.

The North-West region has continued to face persistent security threats from armed groups targeting communities, travellers, and military formations.

Military authorities have urged residents to support ongoing operations by providing credible intelligence to security agencies.

SUNTV Global will continue to monitor developments from the region.
