U.S. President Donald Trump has directed federal agencies to begin identifying and preparing government records related to aliens, extraterrestrial life, and unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) for public release.
The directive, announced in a post on Truth Social, instructs relevant departments — including the United States Department of Defense — to start reviewing files connected to UFO sightings and other unexplained aerial incidents.
Trump described the issue as “highly complex, but extremely interesting and important,” saying the decision was driven by growing public interest in the topic.
“Based on the tremendous interest shown, I will be directing the Secretary of War, and other relevant Departments and Agencies, to begin the process of identifying and releasing Government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life,” he wrote.
Tension With Obama Over Alien Remarks
The announcement came shortly after Trump criticised former U.S. President Barack Obama for comments he made during a recent podcast interview.
Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump accused Obama of potentially revealing sensitive information after the former president reportedly said during a rapid-fire segment that “aliens are real.”
“He’s not supposed to be doing that,” Trump said, according to media reports, adding that Obama “made a big mistake.”
However, Trump himself took a cautious stance when asked about extraterrestrial life, saying he was unsure whether aliens exist and does not hold a firm opinion on the matter.
Obama Clarifies Position
Following widespread attention, Obama later clarified his remarks on social media, stating that while it is statistically possible life exists elsewhere in the vast universe, he saw no evidence of extraterrestrial contact during his presidency from 2009 to 2017.
He also dismissed conspiracy theories about secret alien facilities, including claims tied to Area 51.
No Proof Despite Rising Interest
Interest in UFOs — now officially referred to as UAPs — has surged in recent years.
A 2024 Pentagon report concluded there was no evidence the U.S. government had encountered alien life, noting most sightings were linked to ordinary objects or misidentified natural phenomena.
Similarly, a 2023 U.S. congressional hearing on UAPs failed to produce definitive proof of extraterrestrial activity.
Despite the lack of confirmed evidence, Trump’s new directive is expected to renew global attention on one of the most debated mysteries of modern times.
