SUNTV Global Channel has obtained what appears to be leaked WhatsApp conversations suggesting that nurses employed by the Lagos State Government are being coerced and mobilised to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Multiple sources allege that nurses are under pressure to register for voter cards with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and pledge loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The mobilisation reportedly occurs through dedicated WhatsApp groups, including one titled “Nurses4BAT”, referencing Tinubu’s initials.
Screenshots obtained by SUNTV show messages instructing nurses to act swiftly, register to vote, and liaise with specific contacts linked to the APC. One message, signed by Hon. Taiye-Ulebor Afusat, Head of Unit, Nursing Services, reads:
“Good morning, great political nurses of Lagos State. If you don’t have a voters card or you want to change your information or voting address, please go to this office close to the INEC office at Ikeja GRA.”
The messages reportedly advise members to maintain strict confidentiality:
“Please don’t share this information to anyone who is not a nurse.”
Sources say nurses who have previously submitted their credentials may find their names added to the APC membership register without explicit consent, raising concerns about subtle coercion within the system. One source explained that even nurses who have not expressed interest in joining the APC could be automatically listed as members if their professional credentials are accessible.
Further instructions circulating within the group direct nurses to liaise with a designated contact person, identified as Mr. Ajao, purportedly to facilitate registration and updates to voter information.
Nigeria’s next presidential election is scheduled for February 20, 2027, and recent election cycles have raised ongoing concerns about vote-buying, the integrity of voter registers, and electoral violence.
Earlier this month, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) accused the APC of coercing civil servants in multiple states to join the party under an ongoing electronic membership drive. Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, described the practice as unconstitutional, undemocratic, and a breach of civil service neutrality, warning that public servants are being pressured to surrender their freedom of association in exchange for job security or career advancement.
