Armed bandits suspected to be operating from the dense forests of the Borgu National Park in neighbouring Niger State have launched a deadly coordinated attack on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing more than 10 residents and setting several houses ablaze.
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that the attack occurred on Tuesday evening at about 6:00pm, when the assailants arrived in large numbers, firing sporadically and throwing the rural settlements into chaos.
Residents said the sudden gunfire triggered panic, forcing villagers—mostly women, children, and the elderly—to flee into nearby bushes and neighbouring communities for safety.
Eyewitnesses told SUNTV Global Channel that the attackers moved from house to house, torching buildings and destroying personal belongings. Several victims were reportedly killed while attempting to escape, while others were shot inside their homes.
The violent assault has left many families displaced, with survivors now seeking refuge in surrounding towns as fear grips the area.
Photographs obtained from the scene reveal extensive destruction, with multiple homes reduced to rubble and household items completely burnt.
Reacting to the attack, the Kwara State Government expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property. In a statement released Tuesday night, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, said Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq was personally monitoring developments and had received detailed briefings from security agencies.
The governor condemned the incident, describing it as a “cowardly expression of frustration” by terrorist groups facing sustained pressure from ongoing security operations across the state.
“The governor condemns the attack, which he says is a cowardly expression of frustration by terrorist cells following the successes recorded in recent counter-terrorism campaigns,” the statement said.
The state government further suggested that the attack may have been deliberately timed to divert the attention of security forces who have intensified operations against kidnapping gangs and criminal networks along forested border areas.
Governor Abdulrazaq has since directed security agencies to scale up counter-terrorism operations in Kaiama and surrounding communities, assuring residents that decisive steps are being taken to restore peace.
He also extended his condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Kaiama community, pledging the state government’s continued collaboration with security agencies to prevent further attacks.
