The Bayelsa State Police Command has intensified investigations into the controversial death of 24-year-old Patrick Peresoudei, a resident of Amassoma community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, by questioning four personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the police confirmed that the NSCDC officers were interrogated over their alleged involvement in the events that led to Peresoudei’s arrest and subsequent death. The statement, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation.
According to the police, the NSCDC personnel allegedly accompanied a man identified as Bodmas Kemepadei to Amassoma, where Peresoudei was arrested. He was later taken to Kemepadei’s residence in Yenagoa, where he was reportedly tortured before he died.
The police disclosed that the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has also commenced questioning members of the investigative team attached to Operation Restore Peace, popularly known as Operation Puff Adder, as part of efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“All suspects alleged to have been involved in this case will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law if found culpable,” the police stated.
Meanwhile, the prime suspect, Bodmas Kemepadei, remains at large. The command said it has launched a manhunt for him, activating its intelligence network to ensure his arrest.
The Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State, CP Iyamah Daniel, appealed to members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing credible information that could aid the investigation.
Reacting to the development, the Bayelsa State spokesperson of the NSCDC, Solomon Ogbere, confirmed that the officers were with Kemepadei on the day of the incident, explaining that they were assigned to him under the Tatitan Security Corridor, a pipeline infrastructure protection arrangement.
“Yes, our personnel were with Bodmas Kemepadei because they were attached to him under the Tatitan Security Corridor. Upon realising the matter was a case of cyberbullying, they withdrew and advised him to report the issue to the police. Patrick and his brother were handed over to the police based on that advice,” Ogbere said.
He stressed that the NSCDC does not condone any form of illegality and is fully cooperating with the police investigation.
“The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps does not tolerate criminality. We are open to investigation, and the personnel involved have already made statements to the police. Anyone found guilty will face the full weight of the law,” he added.
As investigations continue, the case has sparked public concern and renewed calls for accountability and justice in the conduct of security operatives across the state.
