Fresh fears over worsening insecurity have gripped Kano State following the killing of a prominent community businessman during a late-night attack by suspected bandits in Bebeji Local Government Area.
Gunmen believed to be bandits on Monday night invaded Tiga town, where they shot dead a well-known businessman, Alhaji Habibu Mai Shago, inside his shop before looting valuables and fleeing the area.
The deadly incident has further heightened concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria’s northwest, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities increasingly exposed to violent attacks.
Details of the attack were first disclosed in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) early Tuesday by security analyst DanKatsina50, who described the killing as another stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by banditry in the region.
“Last night, gunmen suspected to be bandits invaded Tiga town in Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State. During the attack, they killed a well-known community businessman, Alhaji Habibu Mai Shago, in his shop and carted away valuables before fleeing the area,” the statement read.
Residents of Tiga town were thrown into panic following the attack, with many lamenting what they described as growing insecurity and the vulnerability of local communities to criminal violence.
The killing has reignited public debate over the sustained escalation of banditry across parts of northern Nigeria and raised fresh questions about the effectiveness of current security measures.
“How long will the continued escalation of banditry in Nigeria’s northwest persist, and what concrete steps are being taken to protect lives and livelihoods?” the statement queried.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. However, residents are calling for the immediate deployment of security personnel to Tiga town and intensified patrols to prevent further attacks.
Community leaders in Bebeji Local Government Area described the late Alhaji Habibu Mai Shago as a peaceful, hardworking businessman whose death represents a significant loss to the community.
The latest killing adds to a growing list of violent incidents linked to banditry and other criminal activities across northern Nigeria, where armed groups have been blamed for killings, kidnappings, and the displacement of thousands of residents in recent years.
