A 12-year-old girl, identified as Nabilat, has died after falling into a domestic well in the Ikoyi community of the Irewolede area, Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The tragedy occurred around 10:35 a.m. on Saturday when the young girl reportedly went to fetch water and slipped into the well. According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the incident was reported by a resident, identified simply as Mayowa, who witnessed what happened and immediately placed a distress call.
Firefighters were promptly dispatched to the scene, recovered the girl’s body and handed it over to a family member.
“According to the report, the victim went to fetch water and in the process, one of her legs slipped off the ground, which made her tumble into the well,” the service stated.
Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Falade Olumuyiwa, described the incident as heartbreaking and urged parents and guardians to avoid sending underage children to fetch water from domestic wells.
“The general public must be more careful in their day-to-day activities, and parents should desist from sending underage children to fetch water in domestic wells,” he warned.
The incident has renewed concerns over safety around domestic wells, which remain widely used in many Ilorin communities, especially during the dry season when water scarcity becomes more pronounced.
