Canadian authorities have charged a 38-year-old Nigerian man, Nnamdi Enunwa, in connection with an alleged stabbing incident involving his roommate in Oshawa, Ontario, as police intensify investigations and appeal to the public for useful information.
According to the Central East Division Police, the incident occurred on Thursday, January 1, 2026, when officers responded to an emergency call reporting an armed individual at a residential property located near Ritson Road North and Adelaide Avenue East.
Police said residents in the area raised the alarm after a disagreement between two roommates reportedly escalated into a violent confrontation.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers found both the suspect and the injured victim inside the residence.
“Officers arrived on scene and located both the suspect and the victim. The suspect was arrested, and the victim was transported to a local-area hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was taken into custody without incident,” the police said in an official statement.
Mr Enunwa was immediately arrested at the scene, while his roommate was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Authorities confirmed that although the injuries were serious, the victim’s condition was not life-threatening.
Following preliminary investigations, police charged Enunwa with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing a criminal offence. He is currently being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
The Central East Division Police stressed that the charges are allegations and have not yet been tested in court, noting that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are still ongoing.
As part of the probe, police have called on members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or possess relevant information to come forward. Investigators specifically requested that such information be directed to Detective Baldini of the Central East Division Criminal Investigations Branch.
Authorities also encouraged anonymous tips through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers, adding that informants may be eligible for a cash reward.
The case has drawn increased public attention amid heightened scrutiny of violent incidents involving foreign nationals in Canada, particularly following a recent high-profile case in which an Indian student was fatally stabbed by a Nigerian student in a separate incident.
