In a major development, the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted ₦500 million bail each to former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, alongside his son, Abdulaziz Malami, and one of his wives, Bashir Asabe, who are standing trial over alleged money laundering.
Justice Emeka Nwite ordered that each defendant must present two sureties who own landed property in highbrow Abuja districts, including Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarinpa, and deposit their travel documents with the court. The court also directed verification of the property documents by the Deputy Chief Registrar, and required the sureties to swear affidavits of means.
Additionally, Malami is required to submit his own travel documents and is barred from leaving the country without prior court permission.
The bail decision comes after the court adjourned to hear Malami’s application, following his remand at Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja. Malami, his son Abdulaziz—a Senior Advocate of Nigeria—and wife Bashir Asabe are facing a 16-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accused of allegedly laundering ₦8.7 billion.
The trio had earlier pleaded not guilty when arraigned before Justice Nwite on December 29, 2025, prompting their remand pending the outcome of the bail application.
The court’s decision is a significant moment in a high-profile case that has attracted national attention, as Nigeria’s legal and political circles closely monitor developments.
