A former campaign director to President Bola Tinubu, Hajiya Naja’atu Mohammed, has stirred controversy after alleging that Nigeria is no longer being governed by its elected leadership but is instead under the effective control of foreign powers, particularly the United States.
Speaking in an interview with Arewa Source, the Kano-based politician warned that Nigeria’s sovereignty is under serious threat, describing recent political and security developments as signs of a return to colonial-style domination.
According to Naja’atu, Nigeria is gradually losing control over its internal affairs, a situation she believes has endangered the freedom and safety of its citizens.
“It is only God that will continue to protect Nigeria and Nigerians. I have said this before and I will say it again — they have brought back the colonisation era. Nigeria and its people will not have freedom anymore,” she said.
She contrasted Nigeria’s position with that of some neighbouring West African countries, noting that Niger Republic, Mali and Burkina Faso had openly rejected foreign military involvement.
“These countries chased foreign intervention away, saying they are tired of foreign influence. But because of how bad Nigeria and its leaders have become, they are now calling for foreign intervention,” she stated.
Placing her argument in a historical context, Naja’atu recalled Nigeria’s long-standing stance against foreign military involvement since independence in 1960.
“Since Nigeria got its independence, it has never accepted military intervention from a foreign country. But this is now happening under President Bola Tinubu,” she said.
In one of her strongest remarks, Naja’atu claimed Nigeria had effectively lost its sovereignty, declaring that real power no longer resides with the Nigerian presidency.
“The only thing left for Nigeria to say is Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un — things have gone from bad to worse. Nigerians have lost their country to foreign powers. It is not Tinubu ruling Nigeria anymore; it is Donald Trump,” she alleged.
She went further to accuse Western powers of recolonising Nigeria, insisting that economic policies and taxation were now being influenced by foreign interests.
“We have now been recolonised. Even our taxes will go to France. Nigeria has become a business, and the new tax law is full of foreign influence. We will not accept this,” she added.
Her comments come days after the United States carried out airstrikes on December 25 against Islamist militant camps in Sokoto State. The operation, which targeted Islamic State–linked fighters, was conducted in coordination with Nigerian authorities.
According to official statements, the airstrikes were authorised by President Bola Tinubu and U.S. President Donald Trump as part of ongoing counterterrorism cooperation between Abuja and Washington. Nigerian defence officials said the strikes were based on local intelligence and aimed solely at extremist targets.
While residents in parts of Sokoto reported panic following loud explosions, authorities stated that there were no confirmed civilian casualties and that the operation was not directed at civilian populations.
