The United States military has denied reports that seven sailors were killed in a brawl aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, describing the claims as false and warning that such misinformation could harm service members and their families.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) issued the clarification on Friday following reports circulating about the carrier’s prolonged deployment to the Middle East.
According to CENTCOM, claims that seven sailors died in a fight aboard the aircraft carrier are false. The command also rejected reports suggesting a sharp increase in suicidal ideation among personnel on board.
CENTCOM said the USS Abraham Lincoln has recorded an 84.4 per cent crew reenlistment rate, which it described as among the highest across U.S. Navy aircraft carriers.
The command added that sailors and Marines serving with the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group have remained resilient after more than 260 days at sea, completing about 10,000 aircraft flights and expending approximately 1.5 million pounds of ordnance.
CENTCOM further stated that no service member aboard the aircraft carrier has died, adding that a sailor who fell overboard on August 3 was quickly and safely recovered.
However, concerns about conditions aboard the carrier have continued to attract attention in the United States.
U.S. lawmakers, including Senators Richard Blumenthal and Ruben Gallego, have called for greater congressional oversight following reports of shortages of basic supplies, contaminated water, plumbing problems, long working hours and worsening mental-health concerns among some crew members.
Senator Gallego has called for a bipartisan Senate delegation to visit the USS Abraham Lincoln and investigate the reported conditions. He said sailors deserve clarity about when they will return home after the vessel’s lengthy deployment.
Family members of sailors have also reportedly raised concerns during meetings with Navy officials, particularly over food shortages, living conditions and the prolonged separation of their relatives from home.
The USS Abraham Lincoln is a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and serves as the flagship of the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group. The vessel carries approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines.
While CENTCOM has strongly rejected claims of multiple deaths aboard the carrier, the controversy over the prolonged deployment and reported living conditions continues to draw scrutiny from lawmakers and families of personnel.
