Security operatives in have arrested seven suspects in connection with the abduction of passengers from a commercial bus in Otukpo Local Government Area, as efforts to rescue remaining victims continue.
The arrests were confirmed by the following a coordinated security operation launched after the attack, which occurred on April 15.
Gunmen had reportedly intercepted a bus, robbed passengers, and abducted several of them into nearby bushes. While some reports suggested that about 17 passengers were taken, police authorities stated that 14 persons were abducted, with one victim escaping during the incident.
Police spokesperson, , described the arrests as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle the kidnapping network responsible for the attack.
According to the police, tactical teams and anti-kidnapping units have launched search-and-rescue operations in Amla Forest and surrounding areas, where the victims are believed to be held.
Authorities disclosed that some victims have already been rescued and are currently receiving medical attention, while at least two others managed to escape from captivity.
The police also addressed reports claiming that the victims were candidates travelling for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), describing the information as inaccurate. According to the command, the victims were ordinary passengers travelling in a Makurdi-bound bus and not part of any organised student convoy.
Meanwhile, the bus driver is reportedly under interrogation for allegedly violating company procedures, including travelling at night and picking up passengers outside approved guidelines, actions authorities believe may have exposed passengers to the attack.
The Commissioner of Police, , assured that security agencies are intensifying efforts to rescue the remaining victims and restore calm in the area.
The incident has further raised concerns over the rising wave of kidnappings and insecurity affecting commuters in parts of Benue State, with residents calling for stronger security measures along major routes.
