Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and ex-NNPCL official, Bala Maijama’a Wunti, have failed in their bids to secure the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections in Bauchi State.
The keenly contested APC governorship primary ended with former Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, emerging victorious after defeating six other aspirants in an election that reportedly experienced hours of delay before the final announcement.
The results were announced in the early hours of Saturday by the Chairman of the APC Governorship and House of Assembly Primaries Committee for Bauchi State, retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, John Abang.
According to the official results, Mohammed Abubakar secured 57,517 votes to clinch the party’s ticket, while Yusuf Tuggar came second with 26,001 votes.
Former NNPCL official Bala Wunti polled 13,648 votes, narrowly edging Nura Manu Soro, who scored 13,638 votes.
Other contenders included Kabir Baba Ma’aji with 8,157 votes, Baba Abubakar Suleiman with 7,688 votes, and Yakubu Yakubu Abdullahi, who polled 7,181 votes.
The victory marks a major political comeback attempt for Mohammed Abubakar, who lost his re-election bid in 2019 to the current Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Political observers say the outcome of the APC primary may significantly shape the political landscape in Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Yusuf Tuggar was among the early cabinet members who resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s administration after the directive requiring political appointees with 2027 ambitions to step down from office.
The APC primary outcome has since generated reactions within political circles as supporters of different aspirants continue to assess the result.
