Panic erupted in Gwarjo Village, Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State, after suspected bandits reportedly stormed a Shari’ah Court and opened fire while allegedly searching for the presiding judge.
The incident, which occurred around midday on Wednesday, forced court staff, litigants, and residents to flee for safety as the armed attackers invaded the court premises, firing gunshots and demanding to know the whereabouts of Judge Mohammed Muktar.
According to eyewitness accounts, the judge noticed the approaching gunmen before they reached the courtroom and quickly escaped through a window. A commercial motorcyclist reportedly assisted him in fleeing the area moments before the attackers arrived.
Witnesses said the assailants entered the courtroom shooting indiscriminately and repeatedly asked for the judge. After discovering he had escaped, they allegedly threatened to kill him should he return to preside over court proceedings in the community.
The attack has heightened fears among residents of Gwarjo, a community that has experienced repeated attacks by armed bandits in recent years. It also raises fresh concerns over the safety of judicial officers and other public servants working in insecurity-prone rural communities.
As of the time of filing this report, no casualties had been officially confirmed, and there was no immediate statement from security authorities regarding arrests or the identity of the attackers.
Security agencies are expected to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible and strengthen protection for judicial institutions and personnel in vulnerable communities.
