Kaduna Polytechnic is under scrutiny after videos surfaced online showing female students reportedly denied access to campus by security personnel over what was deemed “indecent” dressing during the Ramadan fasting period.
In the widely circulated footage, a female student alleged that security officials at the school gate stopped several students from entering, claiming their attire did not meet the institution’s dress code. The students were reportedly instructed to cover their bodies more fully due to the Ramadan observance.
“They said because they are fasting, we should cover our bodies. Do they want us to wear cardigans in this heat? We are not secondary school students,” one student said in the video.
The affected students were reportedly barred because their outfits lacked long sleeves, sparking outrage among the student body and on social media.
Following the backlash, the management of Kaduna Polytechnic issued a statement distancing the institution from the actions of its Dress Code Committee. The statement, signed by Deputy Registrar Godwin B. Ayegba, noted that the outfits appeared moderate and appropriate and that the students should not have been denied entry.
While reaffirming the importance of a dress code policy to maintain professionalism and a conducive learning environment, the school emphasized that enforcement must not be “extreme or arbitrary.”
Kaduna Polytechnic confirmed it has launched an investigation into the incident and will take appropriate measures to prevent future overzealous enforcement. The institution also urged students to comply with dress code guidelines and report grievances through official channels rather than social media.
