A tragic incident rocked a busy fruit market in Port Harcourt on Saturday morning after a dispute between a trader and a wheelbarrow pusher turned deadly, sparking tension among traders from different communities.
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that the violence occurred around 7:00 a.m. at the popular Fruit Market in Oil Mill, Rumuokwurusi, within Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
How The Dispute Started
According to eyewitnesses, the trouble began when a trader asked a wheelbarrow pusher to move his wheelbarrow to create space for goods. The request was allegedly refused, leading to a heated argument that quickly drew the attention of other traders and passers-by.
The situation soon escalated into violence, during which the wheelbarrow pusher, identified as Zakara Afaaruwu, reportedly stabbed the trader, Higightor Wenem, a 30-year-old indigene of Benue State.
The victim was rushed to a military hospital for urgent treatment but was later confirmed dead by a doctor.
Police Confirm Arrest
Confirming the incident, spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe‑Koko, said the suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody.
She explained that preliminary findings showed the altercation stemmed from a disagreement over space in the crowded market before it turned violent.
Tension But Calm Restored
The killing reportedly triggered panic and tension between traders from the Benue and Hausa communities in the area. However, swift intervention by police operatives prevented further clashes and restored normalcy.
Authorities say the victim’s body has been deposited in the morgue for autopsy, while investigations continue.
The police also assured residents that the situation is under control and urged the public to remain calm and law-abiding.
