The South African Government has strongly condemned the reported coronation of an alleged Nigerian traditional leader in the Eastern Cape, describing the development as unlawful and unacceptable.
Speaking on behalf of the cabinet, Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, stated that the establishment or recognition of any traditional authority in South Africa must strictly comply with existing legal frameworks governing traditional leadership.
The controversy followed reports of the installation of an “Igwe Ndigbo” (King of the Igbo people) in East London, a move that has sparked outrage among local authorities and traditional leaders.
Ntshavheni emphasized that foreign nationals must respect the laws and customs of their host country, warning that actions perceived as undermining social and cultural systems would not be tolerated.
“We must remind them they are visitors in this country,” she stated, while also condemning the violence that erupted during protests over the incident.
The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has, however, denied that any official coronation took place, distancing the Nigerian government from the controversy and describing the reports as misleading.
In a statement, the commission reaffirmed Nigeria’s respect for South Africa’s sovereignty, laws, and cultural institutions, noting that Igbo cultural practices often involve honorary titles and ceremonies that may be misunderstood outside their traditional context.
The situation escalated as protests, reportedly led by members of ActionSA alongside community groups, turned violent in some areas, resulting in the destruction of properties belonging to foreign nationals.
Authorities have since called for calm, urging residents to exercise restraint while reaffirming their commitment to maintaining law and order.
