The Nigerian Bar Association has strongly condemned the alleged sexual assault and public humiliation of women during a festival in Ozoro, describing the incident as a “national disgrace” and a reflection of moral collapse.
In a statement signed by its President, Afam Osigwe, and the Chairperson of the NBA Women’s Forum, Huwaila Muhammad, the association said the acts carried out in the name of cultural celebration were barbaric and criminal.
“Where women are chased, stripped, groped and publicly humiliated… what is on display is not culture. It is barbarity,” the statement read.
According to the NBA, reports indicate that women were attacked in broad daylight by groups of youths who allegedly stripped, assaulted, and degraded them while others watched and recorded the incidents.
The association stressed that such actions amount to serious criminal offences under Nigerian law, including assault, sexual violence, and violations of fundamental human rights.
It firmly rejected any cultural justification for the acts:
“No tradition or custom can excuse the degradation and violation of women. Any such practice is criminality.”
The NBA called on authorities in Delta State to ensure that all perpetrators are identified, arrested, and prosecuted, warning that failure to act could encourage further violence.
Meanwhile, the Delta State Government has also condemned the incident, stating that no such “festival” is officially recognised. The governor’s media aide, Ossai Ovie Success, described the development as shocking and assured that those responsible would face justice.
Authorities have launched investigations, while security agencies have been directed to increase surveillance and monitor public gatherings to prevent a recurrence.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Nigeria, with renewed calls for stronger action against gender-based violence and better protection of women’s rights.
