The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested ten suspects in connection with illegal mining activities in Kwara State, following a coordinated intelligence-led operation that also led to the seizure of multiple trucks conveying solid minerals.
The arrests were carried out on Sunday, February 1, 2026, by operatives of the EFCC’s Ilorin Zonal Directorate along the Ilorin–Ogbomosho axis, the commission confirmed in a statement released on Monday.
According to the EFCC, the operation was triggered by credible intelligence reports indicating widespread illegal excavation and transportation of solid minerals across parts of Kwara and neighbouring Oyo State.
The suspects, made up of nine truck drivers and one escort, were intercepted during what the anti-graft agency described as a well-coordinated sting operation.
Recovered from the suspects were several trucks laden with solid minerals, including lithium, tin, and lepidolite, believed to have been mined unlawfully.
“The suspects were intercepted and taken into custody during a well-coordinated sting operation. Solid minerals recovered include lithium, tin, and lepidolite,” the EFCC stated.
Preliminary investigations, the commission disclosed, revealed that none of the suspects possessed the required licences, permits, or regulatory approvals to engage in mining or transportation of solid minerals.
“The suspects have no requisite licences, permits, or regulatory approvals for their mining activities. Trucks conveying the unlawfully mined materials were also recovered,” the statement added.
The EFCC noted that investigations are ongoing and assured that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the probe.
